“We showed up early for our interview with Louise Erdrich at Birchbark Books, allowing us an opportunity to browse the independent store she opened in 2001. In addition to a carefully curated selection of Native American, general, and children’s books, the store also sells Native arts and jewelry, carved Zuni Pueblo fetishes, birdhouses, and signed copies of all of Louise’s books. It also features a handmade canoe hanging from the ceiling, a confessional/forgiveness booth for “the dispensation of random absolution,” and a dozen or so dogs who come to work on various days with their people.” (Nancy Pearl and Jeff Schwager, The Writer’s Library)
