Searching for Margarito Temprana

“And then, a little louder, so Kathy could hear: “It’s my work.” Grace checked the time on the phone. Half past seven. So weird.

“Work?” called Kathy, and then coughed thickly. “Why is your work calling?”

“I have no idea, Mom.”

“So? Call them back.”

“I will in a minute.”

“What if it’s important?”

“Nothing at my office is important.” Grace stared irritably at her phone. For God’s sake. She had gotten home only an hour ago. “I’ll call in a sec.” She sighed. “Let’s just make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m urinating, Grace. I’m not having heart surgery.” The door opened a little, and Grace saw her mom’s pinched features scowling through the crack. “Call them.”” (Ben H. Winters, Big Time)
